So there has been a bit of “what if humans were the weird ones?” going around tumblr at the moment and Earth Day got me thinking. Earth is a wonky place, the axis tilts, the orbit wobbles, and the ground spews molten rock for goodness sakes. What if what makes humans weird is just our capacity to survive? What if all the other life bearing planets are these mild, Mediterranean climates with no seasons, no tectonic plates, and no intense weather?

What if several species (including humans) land on a world and the humans are all “SCORE! Earth like world! Let’s get exploring before we get out competed!” And the planet starts offing the other aliens right and left, electric storms, hypothermia, tornadoes and the humans are just … there… counting seconds between flashes, having snowball fights, and just surviving.

To paraphrase one of my favorite bits of a ‘humans are awesome’ fiction megapost: “you don’t know you’re from a Death World until you leave it.” For a ton of reasons, I really like the idea of Earth being Space Australia.

Being from Alaska, this was sort of how I felt going to college in the lower 48′s and learned that no one else had been put through a literal survival camp as a regular part of their school curriculum, including but not limited to:

1. Learning to recognize all forms of animal tracks in the wild so you can avoid bears and moose and search out rabbits and other small animals to eat.

2. Extensive swimming and climbing on glacial pieces with competitions to see who could last the longest, followed by a group sit in the sauna so we wouldn’t get hypothermia (no, not kidding, I really did this many times as a kid!)

3. How to navigate using the stars to get back to civilization.

4. How to select the right type of moss from the trees to start a fire with damp wood (because, y’know, you’re in a field of snow. Nothing is dry.)

5. How to carve out a small igloo-like space to sleep in the snow to preserve body heat and reduce the windchill so you won’t freeze to death in the arctic.

“I’m telling you, I don’t think we need to worry about territory conflicts with the humans. You know all those deathtrap hell-worlds in the Argoth Cluster?”
“Those worthless rocks? Yeah.”
“80% of them are considered ‘resort destinations’ by those freaky little primates.”

“I’m telling you, they terraform for fun!”
“Don’t be ridiculous”
“No, seriously. Some of their most celebrated cultural loci are built on swamps. They have an entire city that is literally in a body of water. Not, like, an artificial pontoon city, they literally sunk the foundations into water. For Grilp’s sake, they build elaborate structures out of frozen water AND THEN SLEEP IN THEM.”
“Dear Thilak. Think we could get them to terraform our moons?”
“Psh, they’d probably pay for the privilege.”

Eventually, it occurs to someone that humans are the perfect terraforming shock troops, as it were. They think it’s fun to be sent to horrible planets! They’re really good at surviving and then taming them! All you have to do is sit back and wait until the planet is habitable, and then move there yourself! It’s genius.

It only takes one try before the reality of the situation sets in: human definitions of ‘taming’ and ‘habitable’ are woefully incomplete.

“Why did you not eliminate the venomous plant life?” Grahssk’ti moans, clutching one limb.

“Those?” The human laughs. “Why bother? They’re not that bad. And they eat the mosquitoes.”

Grahssk’ti shudders. The ‘mosquitoes’ are… not to be mentioned. Just one swarm of them caused a landing shuttle to crash three planetary daylights ago.

“And the acid storms? Why did you not warn us of them?”

“I mean, they’re annoying,” the human says, shrugging, “but we figured the cool sunsets made up for it.”

Grahssk’ti flails helplessly. “What about the ten-meter tall Fanged Death Bringers? They can eliminate an entire settlement in under an hour!”

“They’re so cute!” the human says, brightening. “Have you met mine? Her name is Spot!”

Humans are told of some planet or region of space that is considered “completely and utterly inhospitable - it would be folly to try and settle there.”

Without fail, a decent number make it a point to settle there because “Fuck You That’s Why.” It doesn’t matter how uneconomical it is, how difficult the conditions are, how utterly ridiculous it may seem, there will be at least one human who will attempt to do it only because someone else regardless of species says it is improbable or WORSE impossible.

“This moon is still forming as such it is primarily soft - by that I mean most of the magma is close to the surface and-”

‘OH BADASS you mean its like Mustafar right!?!?!?! I’m totally going to build a castle there.’

“What. I mean. There is NO fertile ground there whatsoever. No ecosystem. It is molten rock and minerals only.”

‘Which will make my castle there look METAL AS FUCK am I RIGHT!?!??! Come on. COME ON. I TAUGHT YOU HOW TO FISTBUMP COME ON.’

“….you….you are going to die, you know this right?”

‘I’m getting the feeling you don’t want to come to Lava Castle for some reason?’

“Listen, lad. I’ve built this kingdom up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was molten magma. All those aliens said I was daft to build a castle on a molten planet, but I built it all the same, just to show ‘em. It sank into the magma. So, I built a second one. That sank into the magma. So I built a third one. That spontaneously combusted, turned to ash, then sank into the magma. But the fourth one stayed up. An’ that’s what your gonna get, lad – the strongest castle in this solar system.”

“I’m gonna need for you to explain ‘hurricane parties’ to me again. You humans have the technology to track these apocalyptic storms of wind and rain and predict where on the landmass they’ll hit up to a week in advance. And you…have social gatherings during them?”

“Well yeah, but only up to about Category 3 strength. Then it’s time to pack the car and head inland for most people, although a few hardy souls stick around and ride them out.”

“Oh good. Category 3 is what again? Winds up to 75 kilometers per hour?”

“No no, Category 3 starts at 175 kilometers per hour. You left off the one.”

Once my friend Henry was accused of wearing wireless headphones by a substitute so she said for him to hand them over so he took them off and handed them to her. Then later on she asked him a question and he didn’t respond so she said it louder and he still didn’t respond. She asked why he was not responding and he said “I can’t understand you ma'am, you took my hearing aids.”

HOLY SHIT

one time we had a sub that was handing back papers and called my name. I asked if someone could grab it for me and she started mocking me for not even standing up. taunting me asking why I was not walking up to the front to get the paper myself.

my classmates went dead silent and after the sub’s laughter ended someone informed her that the wheelchair parked nearby belonged to me

I had a sub in English once, on presentation day. And everyone goes up and does their thing, and then its my turn. The whole time im stuttering and mixing up my words, having to stop and re-say my sentences. The rest of the class is used to this and claps. However, by the time its over, the teacher is 100% done.

Starts saying horrible thing about how im going to have to get over my ‘fear of public speaking’ and how she’s heard 8 year olds give better presentations (plus worse things but I don’t really member them). By then im in tears and on the brink of a panic attack, and then she starts telling me off for crying

The rest of the class is horrified. Then this boy stands up. He never been my friend and we never really got along, but he’d never bullied me. He told her in a pissed off, cold voice that in freshmen year I got a concussion and that I never really recovered from it, so all that was medical related and I couldn’t help it. Then he starts telling her off and the rest of the class joins him.

The teacher is mortified and tries to cover her ass, but the whole class walked out and that boy took me by the shoulders and we all walked to the principles office and told him what had happened. Lets just say she isn’t teaching anymore.

Also, turns out that boy had a sister like me, who couldn’t really speak. We’ve been best friends for 8 years and i’ll be his best woman at his wedding next year.

The moral is that Teachers, even subs, and adults shouldn’t scold kids before knowing the whole story, because shit like that can fuck up kids self-esteem for the rest of their life.

When I was thirteen, I had to have spinal surgery. When my doctor said I was allowed to attend school again, he said I had to use a wheelchair when on school grounds. My first day back at school, my special-ed teacher had put up a banner in her classroom that read, “There is no elevator to success. You must take the stairs.” I asked what that meant regarding my wheelchair, and she gave me detention for “disrespecting her authority”. The next week she gave us a homework assignment to design a poster that could potentially be used as a Public Service Advertisement. On the due-date, I handed this in.

My special-ed teacher was fucking OUTRAGED. She wanted me expelled for ridiculing her authority in front of the other students. The principal proclaimed my work to be “a masterpiece of satirical genius” and vetoed the special-ed teacher’s attempt to expel me.

Okay, I have another book pitch for you all and you’re probably going to all hate me for this one. That’s fine, I can deal with that. Just promise me that you’ll at least read the whole pitch through before grabbing the pitchforks. And yes, I’ll admit, some of these plotpoints are inspired by other stories that have come out. The difference is that I’m not a straight, abled, middle-aged, writer trying to appeal to the youths on The Tumblr. Anywho, hear me out:

“I’m not gay.”

That’s it; that’s how the book opens. Our main character goes on to talk about how he’s a college freshman and it seems like everyone on his campus is gay, at least it feels that way, because every single day, there’s always something. There’s always a big, dramatic, outing. There’s always a LGBT related band playing or a movie showing or a mini-parade. It’s always brought up in class and by the supportive faculty and in the media. And online. Oh, god, and online. And it freaks our main character out. No, don’t, don’t abandon this yet, I need you all to trust me. It freaks him out because, to him, it’s weird that everyone’s sexualities are being presented as A Thing. Why do they have to be A Thing? Why can’t people just be whoever they are without having to scream it to the world in a passionate act of justification? Well, he knows why, and he respects everyone who does it, but it still makes him uncomfortable, worried, pressured.

Still with me? Good. Because our main character, he has a roommate. Yeah. They were roommates. Continue hearing me out, that’s all I ask. ‘They’ refers to him and another freshman, Tony, a student who uses a wheelchair, on the back of which a rainbow flag flies. And that’s fine. Our main character thinks that’s great. I mean, he’s not going to put a rainbow flag on the back of his wheel—wait a minute, he doesn’t have a wheelchair! Oh, good, he at least gets out of doing that one.

Okay, okay, I hear you, actual plots are important and here it is:

The story begins with Tony freaking out because his aide was supposed to take him to the local pride parade but she cancelled on him last minute. He’s crushed. He can’t go on his own because pride parades are inaccessible af. So our main character is like, “Sure, man, I’ll go with you.” Which turns out to be an extremely uncomfortable situation for our main character because everyone keeps using the word “gay” or wanting to sell merchandise about how proud one is to be “gay” and he’s just like, “But I’m not actually gay.” “See the thing is…” “Well, actually…” all while Tony’s cracking up in the background. The parade ends and the two head back to the dorm, pass out in their respective beds, wake up the next morning, and go on with their lives.

It’s not until a few weeks later that chaos erupts.

Someone posts photos of the two at the parade. Someone else reblogs/reposts and it just…it doesn’t take long. It doesn’t take long at all. All of a sudden, the photo is everywhere, on every main social media website, being talked about by small news channels, our main character’s friends/family begin blowing up his phone with calls and messages, it’s literally pandemonium. The thing is, other than the trolls, the reception is all positive. The image is constantly captioned with things like #LoveWins, #LoveDoesn’tDiscriminate, etc. People are gushing about the gay man in a wheelchair whose ‘boyfriend’ loves him no matter what.

Both are mortified, Tony even more so when he realizes just how much inspiration porn people are cranking out because of this. (”It’s fucking inspiration porn, look!” “Dude, I’m not looking at your computer after you say the word ‘porn’!”) I should mention that ‘inspiration porn’ is a term coined by the late, great, Stella Young, a disability advocate who used it to describe when abled people gush over people with disabilities doing simple things. So abled people are squeeing over the disabled guy who went to the Pride Parade because, to quote Archer: “he’s just like people”. While Tony’s dealing with that, our main character is dealing with being forcibly outed, even though he keeps trying to tell everyone that he’s not gay and to stop saying that he’s gay. And god it just…it gets so bad, folks. We’re talking fanart. Fanfiction. Hashtags. They get contacted by different reporters. Leaders of advocacy groups. Talkshow hosts. You name it. ~~All~~ while our main character has to wearily/warily deal with his family’s excited shrieks because they “always knew it, so tell us everything, hold nothing back”. As if that wasn’t overwhelming enough, everyone on the campus is showing the two their full support. And yes, that’s great, it’s terrific, but it’s also extremely overwhelming. He went from feeling stressed about how everyone’s turning their sexualities into A Thing that has to be constantly talked about, to having his sexuality be The Thing that everyone’s constantly talking about. He can’t go anywhere, even class, without someone bringing it up in an attempt to support him, while never letting him be.

He’s clearly overwhelmed by it all. He goes home for Thanksgiving, only to find that his parents painted his bedroom wall to look like the giant pride flag. (*On the phone* “It looks like Lady Gaga threw up on my wall; Tony; Tony, stop fucking laughing! Tony, stop fucking—no, Mom, I don’t need to have a different sex talk now, oh my god, tell me those aren’t rainbow cupcakes, you brought rainbow cupcakes to our gay sex talk, okay, yep, yep, I’m getting on the bus and going back to the campus early and no, BUS DRIVER, I’M NOT GOING TO GIVE YOU MY AUTOGRAPH!?”)

So Tony sits him down one night and is like, “Okay, listen, this sucks, it really sucks, but some of it…I mean…look at this…” and he shows our main character all of the hopeful messages from closeted teenagers/adults, especially those with disabilities. He points out that a huge disability-LGBT organization wants him to speak at an upcoming conference, something he’s always dreamed of doing. (”Okay…would you kill me if I did this?” “Kill you? No. Suffocate you like Chief suffocated McMurphy? Yes.” “…Worth it.”) So he goes to this conference and our main character goes to support him and the speech turns out to be amazing and once again, goes viral, Dear Evan Hansen style.

So these two realize that, hey, this really does suck, but if the internet isn’t going to shut up about us anytime soon, at least we can use our fame to inspire people. They give in, one excitedly, one hesitantly, both submitting to the interviews and speeches and disgusting bits of social pressure. (*On a show with a…ahem…specific talkshow host…let’s call her L. N. Yeah…that works* “We’re giving you each half a million dollars towards your college degrees!” “…But we didn’t do anything!” “…I mean…she also gave two million to the kid who dabbed in her parking lot so…” “Yeah, nope, I’m done…”)

It quickly spirals out of control and our main character’s getting more and more uncomfortable because everywhere he looks, there are pictures/videos of him, the homosexual boyfriend of the poor boy in a wheelchair. And nobody, nobody, cares when he tells them that he isn’t gay. They just keep saying it.

While all of this is going on, our main character has a female friend who knows what the two are doing. And our main character kind of has feelings for her. Hey, if you’ve stuck around this long, you might as well stick around for the whole pitch. Tony is beyond supportive (AKA: he cracks up when our character gets mushy and relentlessly teases him while our main character flushes and tells him to shut up). Our main character and this woman share a quick New Year’s kiss. He goes back to his dorm. Falls asleep. Wakes up to Tony frantically shaking him. (”W-wha-what’s going on?” “You cheated on me, you bastard, that’s what’s going on!”) Tony tries to lighten the mood but fails to do so. Someone took a picture of the kiss and just like that, our main character’s public enemy number one because people are horrible. Everyone starts accusing him of faking being gay for the publicity, even though he never wanted it in the fucking first place. Tony feels horrible but what’s done is done. And it gets…it gets so bad. Death threats. Doxxing. Etc. And finally, when he’s at the end of the rope, when he’s got nowhere else to go, he reluctantly gets in front of the microphone and confesses. He’s not gay. He always told people that he wasn’t gay. They didn’t believe him. But he isn’t. He’s. Not. Gay.

He’s bi.

(”At least…I think I’m bi. Maybe I’m pan? I mean, a few weeks ago, I saw a hotdog vendor and they were wearing a nonbi pin…a nonbinary…not a…non-bi…me…bi…possibly bi…anywho…I might have stared at them until I almost rode my bike down the subway steps so…you know…whatever that means…I mean…I think I’m still bi…I like the bi flag…can you choose your sexuality based on what colors you like…because bis have nice colors…um, so, yeah…sorry…”

He goes onto say that whatever he is, he doesn’t identify with the label ‘gay’. Sure, others do, that’s great, he just never has. And when people give him even more hate and ask why he didn’t just come out and say that, he feverishly replies that he shouldn’t have had to, if people want to be open and proud, they can, he has no problem with it, but he just wanted to be himself without feeling like he had to justify his existence every day of his life. He never got a chance to hide the color of his skin or his glasses or the clothes he bought from the secondhand store, this was the one thing he could control, the one part of his identity that was his and his alone, and they forced it out of him. There’s more to the story but this pitch is getting extremely long.

So I’ll just say that the moral of the story is that the extreme overabundance of corporate/internet slacktivism (i/e: I reblogged a photo, I cured homophobia!) from people/hiveminds wanting to show that they’re the Best Ally has led to an extreme amount of pressure being placed on some people in the LGBT community to feel like their identity is invalid if they don’t scream it to the world every few seconds and it sucks because while being queer is never a choice, how you embrace/present that identity should be a choice, and oftentimes that choice is taken away from you by social pressures and I have never fucking projected in my life so you just lower that raised eyebrow right now.

Anywho…I feel like I need to call this Odd One Out because puns.

All of the above but instead of Antonio/Tony, the roommate’s name is actually Julián. Jules for short. Maybe I’ll throw in a reference to Hey Jude. Maybe I won’t. Either way, trust me, here. You won’t regret it.

Still don’t know the MC’s name but I do know the name of the guy Jules actually falls for. Not spoiling it. Again, trust me. This is gonna be good.

I’m tentatively looking at the name Dante for the MC but the thing is…I’m probably not going to reveal that until the end for a good reason. Said reason is going to be tricky but if I pull this off, it’ll be great.
You will probably have this book by the end of summer. You will definitely not have this book during/by the end of June.
Every chapter title is absolutely going to be a pun.
Don’t ship Dante and Jules. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with shipping them (other than the irony) but don’t expect them to get together in the end. It’s not one of those stories. (i/e: we’ll pretend to date but oh no, it’s no longer pretend).
Frog Mouth Boy is a good guy but, speaking from…well…don’t we have enough stories about white dorky protagonists out there? I actually imagine Luke Youngblood as a faceclaim for Dante. Or, you know, someone who isn’t going to look like Simon Spier and Evan Hansen’s genetic hybrid.
And just to make one thing clear: The main character has absolutely nothing against flamboyancy; he’s just socially awkward af and the thought of drawing attention to himself freaks him out, which is why he’s having such a hard time talking about his sexuality: he feels like the people around him are either presumed straight or comfortably flamboyant, nothing in between. He wants to find a way to be comfortable with who he is without making his identity A Thing because doing so makes him uncomfortable.
That’s why the book has Jules; it’s my way of evening out the spectrum. He’s extremely comfortable/expressive. There’s a dynamic going on here. Dante’s able to physically express himself but he doesn’t want to. Jules wants to but he’s often physically unable to (”Leeeet’s hold the Pride Parade at the top of this gigantic hill!”)
That being said, Dante totally has that switch that all good mom/dad friends have where he’ll be too anxious to talk to a hot guy but if Jules needs him to talk to a hot guy on his behalf, he will be 100% open.
I’m just throwing this out here: I’m grateful for the support but some of you are really Dumbo-ing it up here. (X) Like I know I shouldn’t insult my potential readers but it’s actually kind of amusing how many of you are falling into this category. Some of you are Dumbo. Just saying.
